I get certain phrases stuck in my head sometimes, and this one about nicolas cage has been there for years. I used it as an instagram caption a year or two ago and eventually deleted every photo before deleting my entire account for a month. Most decisions like this, I make out of curiosity, not fear, or shame. I think joy and curiosity are good places to root anything and most of the time, even though not all, you can decide how you react to and feel about things.
I let myself sulk sometimes, but you have to learn how to leap forward in a joyful way unless you want to spend your life picking at your own scabs.
I guess the thing I'm trying to say is that there are so many people in the world. And if you really think about it every body is just skin and bones and eyes and noses and mouths and a whole lot of heart. But nobody else is you and that's sort of wonderful to think about. That you are the only you in the whole entire world.
That's the beauty of spending time in your own mind and trying on different paths for your own thoughts and eventually your own life. You get to become a person in your own sort of life. And you should never forget the agency you have in that because that's how you get to wake up every day kicking and happy about it.
There are so many men who look like nicolas cage. post men. garbage men. teachers grocery clerks. and nicolas cage isn't better than any of them, because everybody is somebody.
but nicolas cage chose to be nicolas cage, you know?
When I was a little girl, I saw him in National Treasure and then after that I got angry to see him in anything but National Treasure.
But now I look at the breadth of things he's done and I realize that you can be anybody, the same way nicolas cage decided to be nicolas cage.
There are people who look like you. People who conform to different standards of beauty. People who have gone to acting school and people who got accepted when they applied to be a postman. But nobody is you and you get to decide who that you is.
Pick something fun and try to be good to people along the way.
But don't put too much pressure on yourself, you know?
You're not nicolas cage. And you don't have to be.
