The Gospel According to Mar

by Mar

CHARISMA BLEEDS AND STAINS EVEN YOUR WORST ENEMY! BE CAREFUL! BUT,

HAVE A BLAST!

Personal Philosophy

Find peace in your uncertainties, and those of others. Big cities and small farms. It’s exciting to listen, more so to remember. I am an American writer and artist dispersing my time between Chicago and New York. Hands show age quickest, take photos and kiss palms.

Love

  • Your gut is the connection of your mind to body and she’s a sapient, ruthless bitch

  • Artists love artists love artists

  • Missed calls necessitate witty voicemail messages

  • Useless without inclusivity

Knee-bucklers

  • TV Westerns and their cultural offspring

  • Steady surrealism in novel writing

  • Silver rings and tattooed fingers

Movement/Diet

  • Backbends make me cry for my mother (I love pilates, ballet and have mommy issues)

  • Favorite/Most Despicable Depression Meal; dry toast with fresh dill and cracked pepper

Beauty

  • Eyeliner but no mascara

  • Sleeping in perfume to sentimentalize my mornings

Hobbies

  • Books in every form; consuming and creating. Intentional, archival pulping, paper-making, book binding.

  • Drinking

  • Dogs. I moved to a new city this past year, and having no connections, took myself to the beach every evening to watch the dogs swim. Winter alternative; fostering puppies who sleep in the knots of your hair and piss in your potted plants

  • NYT crossword and associated word games

Music

  • Dry Cleaning, Colleen, Mothers, The Sundays, Robert Lester Folsom, Hope Sandoval, Bob Dylan, OGRE YOU ASSHOLE, Acetone, Roger Eno, Little Big League, Bar Italia, Cass Elliot, Fishmans, Stereolab, The Cat’s Miaow, All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors.

  • Spotify’s ‘Melancholy Sad Classical’ playlist

  • Henry + Nathan Wolf, my brothers. Both individually talented musicians who, when I’m lucky enough to listen in, create some of the most etheric, poignantly improvised melodies together.
