It's a sunny day in Brooklyn and I'm finding that no amount of coffee can make me focus. Maybe this is the perfect time to write a rambling blog post introducing myself. My name is Sophie and I'm a hot literati intern.
Since I moved to New York in March, I've made a commitment to myself to make it as a freelance writer. I've found that most days, my biggest challenge is my own self belief. That and the oversaturated job market. I've resorted to praying and casting spells. I think both of these things have genuinely, immensely helped.
I'd love to connect with other freelance writers who are making sense of their careers in a time where writing about culture and the arts is undervalued. I'm starting a new venture that I am as excited as I am uncertain about. It seems like everything is in the hands of the universe, and I am trusting that it will catch me. I've been writing in a cafe that has miscellaneous teacups and votive objects left out on the patio like an alter. The man who owns the cafe kindly brings me endless free coffee and snacks as I write. I always ask if I can pay him. He never lets me. It is so kind it makes me tear up.
I'm passionate about sharing resources to support writers, so if anyone has any burning questions, I will do my best to answer. I'll also ask.
I think that as Spring turns into Summer, I will be audacious, and ask for what I want. I urge you to do the same.
Warmly,
Sophie (she/her)
