About

Friendship, freedom, and what a community does to the women it cannot contain. Most people have heard of Toni Morrison. Most people have not actually read her. This companion is built to change that. Over three reading sprints, you will move through one of Morrison's most unsettling and precise novels — not just following the friendship between Sula and Nel but understanding what Morrison is actually doing: why the novel's structure jumps through time, what the Bottom's community reveals about belonging and exclusion, and why Sula herself resists every verdict the reader wants to hand her. Each sprint gives you a framework drawn from Black feminist theory, existentialist philosophy, and anthropology — tools that make Morrison's formal choices legible and her moral complexity impossible to flatten. You will work through active reading questions in your journal, integrate what you are learning, and finish with a shareable homework assignment that proves you were genuinely here. By the end you will have read Sula. You will know what it is arguing. And you will have something real to say about it. Includes three reading sprints, three interdisciplinary frameworks, active reading questions, journal prompts, book club discussion questions, and a final homework assignment designed to be shared with the Hot Literati community. Physical copy of Sula and a journal required.
