How to Get to Inbox Zero

  • 25 Steps

About

Your inbox is not an organization problem. It is an attention problem — and before that, a values problem. Most people treat email like a to-do list someone else wrote for them, and then wonder why they feel perpetually behind on a life they technically chose. The inbox fills up not because you are disorganized but because you have never decided what it is for, what you are willing to receive, and what your correspondence says about how you actually want to live. This course is five modules. You will audit every email account you have and see, honestly, what you have been allowing in. You will build a correspondence philosophy — a set of principles that determines what deserves your attention and what does not. You will build a folder system across every account, grounded in information architecture and cognitive science rather than arbitrary categories you will abandon in a week. You will conduct a full unsubscribe session and reduce your incoming volume permanently. And you will design a daily correspondence practice built on ritual rather than motivation — one that will still be working six months from now. The frameworks come from cognitive load theory, behavioral economics, organizational psychology, and the philosophy of attention. They are not complicated. They were just never applied to the specific problem of a modern inbox full of things you never agreed to receive. By the end, your inbox will not be something that happens to you. It will be something you manage on purpose. You will need your journal and a pen. Write by hand. Work through the modules in order. Time investment: 4–6 hours over a few days. What you need: Your journal, a pen, and every email account you own.
