Looking is not the same as seeing. By the end of this course, you will be able to stand in front of any image — a painting, an advertisement, a building, a photograph — and produce a rigorous analysis of what it is doing and how. You will know how to apply Panofsky's three levels, read visual design as argument, and understand the social and ideological work that images do while appearing to simply show things. You will look at the built world differently. That is permanent.
